The evil eye usually comes from people who are jealous or envious (hasad). the âevil eyeâ is real, as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:
âThe evil eye is real, and if anything were to overtake the divine decree (al-qadar) it would be the evil eye.â
(Narrated by Muslim, 2188, from the hadeeth of Ibn âAbbaas).
The evil eye usually comes from people who are jealous or envious (hasad), it may also come from a person who is not jealous but merely likes something, because of the hadeeth:
âWhoever among you sees something in himself or in his possessions or in his brother that he likes, let him pray for blessing for it, because the evil eye is real.â
Narrated by Ibn al-Sunni in âAml al-Yawm waâl-Laylah, p. 168; and by al-Haakim, 4/216. Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in al-Kalim al-Tayyib, 243.
Protection against the evil eye
To get protection against the evil eye and hasad (destructive envy), there is no doubt that when a person is close to Allaah, always remembering Him (dhikr) and reading Qurâaan, he is less likely to be affected by the evil eye and other kinds of harm from the devils of mankind and the jinn.
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to seek refuge with Allaah for himself, and the greatest means of seeking refuge that is available to the Muslim is reading the Book of Allaah, above all the Miâwadhatayn (the last two Soorahs of the Qurâaan, al-Falaq and al-Naas), Soorat al-Faatihah and Aayat al-Kursiy [al-Baqarah 2:255].
Among the saheeh duâaaâs for refuge that has been narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) are:Â
I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allaah from the evil of that which He has created.
Narrated by Muslim, al-Dhikr waâl-Duâaa, 4881
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to seek refuge with Allaah for al-Hasan and al-Husayn. He said: âYour father [i.e., Ibraaheem] used to seek refuge with Allaah for Ismaaâeel and Ishaaq with these words: Aâoodhu bi kalimaat Allaah al-taammah min kulli shaytaanin wa haammah wa min kulli âaynin laammah (I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allaah, from every devil and every poisonous reptile, and from every bad eye).
Narrated by al-Bukhaari, Ahaadeeth al-Anbiyaaâ, 3120
The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) commanded me, or he commanded (the people) to use ruqyah to deal with the evil eye.
narrated by al-Bukhaari, al-Tibb, 5297
The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) commanded me, or he commanded (the people) to use ruqyah to deal with the evil eye.
Narrated by Abu Dawood, al-Tibb, 3382. Al-Albaani said, in Saheeh Sunan Abi Dawood, its isnaad is saheeh. No. 3282
